I’m offering 6 spots for flat-fee developmental editing of memoir manuscripts this winter. The total cost is 600 dollars and includes a structural edit of a manuscript of 75k words or less, a one-hour online meeting during which we will discuss my suggestions for global revisions, and a one-page summary of my suggestions and highlights from our discussion with a list of recommended readings. I’m offering just 3 spots in January and 3 spots in March. To reserve your spot, add your selection below to cart and pay $200 now. (You will be invoiced for the $400 balance after our online meeting).
How does the process work?
After you pay your $200 deposit, you’ll receive an introductory email from me with instructions for submitting your manuscript. January manuscripts can be sent anytime between now and January 25, 2020. March manuscripts can be sent anytime between February 20th and March 25, 2020 After I’ve received your manuscript, we will find a mutually agreed upon meeting time for our online meeting. Before the meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to send me a list of questions. After our meeting, I’ll send you a one-page summary of the points we discussed, a list of recommended readings, and a link to the recording of the meeting.
Who are you and why should I trust you with my manuscript?
Since 2006, I’ve been working with memoir writers through the University of Washington’s Professional & Continuing Education department. I also teach at Hugo House in Seattle and have taught Master Classes for Hedgebrook. I was the Winter 2018 and Fall 2019 Visiting Distinguished Writer at Seattle University.
I’m the author of two memoirs both sold on proposal: How to Sleep Alone in a King-Size Bed (Crown) and Writing Is My Drink (Simon & Schuster). My personal essays have been published numerous places including the New York Times, The Establishment, The Rumpus, Seattle Times, and ParentMap. See examples here. I have advanced degrees in literature and creative writing from San Francisco State University and the University of Washington.
What if I only have 40 or 50k words but would like feedback on what I have so far? What if I want feedback on a memoir book proposal?
I’m happy to give feedback on a partial draft or a proposal for the same 600-dollar fee. 40/50k words is actually a great place to get some input. If you have less than 40k words and would like some coaching now, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up an appointment at my regular hourly rate of 120/hour.
What if my manuscript is longer than 75k words?
For each additional 10k words, I will charge 100 additional dollars. For developmental edits on a manuscript of 95k words, for example, I will charge a total of 800 dollars.
Will I receive line edits on my manuscript?
